Ontario rules

When do you need a Safety Standards Certificate?

In Ontario you typically need an SSC when you:

  • Transfer a used vehicle to a new owner (unless it's to your spouse)
  • Register a vehicle that came from another province, territory or country
  • Change a vehicle's status from “unfit” to “fit”
  • Register a rebuilt vehicle (the structural inspection is done elsewhere; we don't do salvage or structural inspections)

The certificate is valid for 36 days after the inspection. It confirms the vehicle met Ontario's minimum safety standards on that date. It is not a warranty.

Brakes and tires are two of the main items checked. If they need work, our brake repair and tire services can get you ready.
